Labor Day weekend 2017 brings the unofficial end of summer to Virginia so finish strong with these fun, friendly events in Northern Virginia. Festivals and car shows, waterparks and pools, parks and markets are all ready for one more weekend of no school freedom.
Labor Day Weekend 2017 Events
Waterstock, Tim’s Rivershore, Dumfries, Sep 1 – 4
Head to Tim’s Rivershore by car or boat for 4 days of food, fun, and live music on the banks of the Potomac River. The annual celebration features a non-stop rotation of over 20 great bands beginning Friday night and continuing throughout the weekend. Stick your toes in the sand, feast on fresh seafood, and enjoy the sounds. Music begins at 7:00 pm Friday, then noon daily.
Virginia Scottish Games and Festival, The Plains, Sep 2 – 3
Celebrate the Scottish heritage of the Commonwealth with two days of athletic competitions, music, dance, crafts, a British car show, sheep-herding demonstrations, children’s activities, plenty of Scottish food and drink, and much more. Watch top athletes from around the country compete in the Stone Toss, Caber Toss, Heavy Hammer Throw, Sheaf Toss and other traditional competitions of strength and skill. Leashed dogs are welcome and the games go on rain or shine. Two day admission adult $30; single day $20; children 5 – 12 $5; under 5 free. Children 12 and under free on Sunday. 9:00 – 6:00 daily; Saturday evening concert continues to 9:00.
Apple Gala and Cider Fest, Great Country Farms, Bluemont, Sep 2 – 3
Celebrate apple season with wagon rides to the u-pick apple orchard, cider and apple wine tastings, and a cider pressing demonstration. Attempt to conquer the 2.5 acre corn maze, romp in the play area, visit the farm goats, enjoy live music, and more. The Cider Fest is also held 3 more weekends in September. $10/12 child/adult admission; 9:00 – 6:00 daily.
Lake Anne Jazz & Blues Festival, Reston, Sep 2
The 11th annual Jazz & Blues festival is a free, family friendly event that will showcase a variety of talented regional and national jazz & blues artists. Follow the link for schedule details. Free, 1:00 – 9:00 pm.
Labor Day Car Show, Fairfax, Sep 4
The 18th Annual Labor Day Car Show returns to Fairfax for a day of cars, music, food, and fun. Hundreds of vehicles, from street rods to antiques to custom cars, will be on display in downtown Fairfax. Live music, food, raffles, and trophies add to the fun. The event is free but donations to support local charities are encouraged. 8:00 – 3:00.
Herndon Labor Day Festival, Herndon, Sep 4
Head to downtown Herndon for the annual Labor Day Festival featuring Virginia wine tastings, craft beer, live music, a craft show, lawn games, sponsor gallery, and delicious food vendors. $20 for wine and craft brew tasting, or $5 general admission. Children 12 and under free. No pets allowed. 11:00 – 5:00.
Final Waterpark and Pool Weekend, Multiple Locations, Sep 4
Labor Day weekend marks the end of pool season for most Northern Virginia families, as town and regional pools and waterparks close for the season. All NVRPA pools plus Splash Down and Signal Bay Waterparks will close to humans on Labor Day, so it’s time to get in one more circuit on the lazy river. Doggies turn to swim is September 9th, 10:00 – 2:00.
Most of the outdoor moves end in August, but Labor Day Weekend 2017 offers a few options to relax with a fun flick under the stars. Start the weekend early with a Thursday night showing of Princess Bride in Penrose Square. Or catch the Friday night showing of Babe in Woodbridge.
Dulles Town Center is hosting a Backyard Movie Fest on September 2nd. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for a viewing of Moana, plus family friendly activities and food trucks. Free admission; 5:00, movie at sundown.
Many summer concerts wrapped up in August, but you can catch some outdoor tunes on the green in Great Falls, at River Mill Park in Occoquan, and at Harrison Pavilion in Manassas.
