Illuminate Fairfax, Old Town Fairfax, – Feb 10

New for the 2023/2024 season, see a dazzling display of holiday lights at 4 locations in Old Town Fairfax. All of the light displays are close to each other so easy to see on a wintery walk through Old Town. Free; illuminated 5:00 – 10:00, Thursday – Sunday.

DC Winter Lantern Festival, Tysons, – Feb 12

You have 3 weekends to see the DC Winter Lantern Festival in Tysons Lerner Square. The walk-through show features beautiful Chinese lanterns and offers great photo opps plus kids activities. Stay at Hyatt Tysons Corner and you can walk to the show.

Tickets to the DC Winter Lantern Festival are $21.99/$15.99 for adults/youth 3 – 12. Open 5:00 – 10:00 pm, Friday through Sunday.

Chocolate Lovers Festival, Fairfax, Feb 2 – 4

One of the most popular February events in the area, the annual Chocolate Lovers Festival returns to the City of Fairfax in 2024. Enjoy a whole weekend of delicious chocolate tastes and experiences at the Liquid Chocolate Tent in Old Town Square and other indoor, downtown locations. Fri 6:00 – 8:00, Sat 10:00 – 5:00, Sun noon – 4:00.

National Harbor Restaurant Week, Feb 2 – 11

Enjoy great deals on meals and more during Fooduary, an annual event at National Harbor in Maryland. In addition to special prix fixe menus, enjoy cooking classes and demonstrations plus discounts on entertainment including the Capital Wheel.

Happy Groundhog Day! Feb 2

It's Groundhog Day! Celebrate with a visit to these top must-visit Northern Virginia attractions that we return to again and again.

Or take a hike at one of Northern VA's family-friendly parks and see if you can spot a groundhog or other wildlife. Our favorite Winter Walks in Northern Virginia offer the chance to see wildlife from trails that hold up well to snow and rain. Easy boardwalk trails offer still more great chances to see wildlife up close.

Alexandria Warehouse Sale, Alexandria Feb 3 – 4

Find deals up to 80% off retail prices at the 20th annual designer warehouse sale. This year the sales will be spread out across 50 stores, pop-up tents, and outdoor spaces on King Street in Old Town Alexandria.

Shop a great collection of local boutiques and score some of the best deals of the year. Admission and parking are free all weekend in Old Town. Hours vary by location.

Lunar New Year Celebrations, Fairfax Libraries, Feb 3

Welcome the Year of the Dragon with special Lion Dance performances at several Fairfax County Public Libraries. Follow the link for times and locations.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Dragon with traditional music and dance performances plus giveaways and more. Free, 1:00 – 3:00.

Ice-travaganza, Reston Town Center, Feb 3

Enjoy a day of winter fun at Reston Town Center featuring ice sculptures and demonstrations, games, ice skating performances, hot chocolate, and more. Free, noon – 3:00.

LEGO Adult Night, Springfield, Feb 9

Adult brick-lovers get a night of fun at the new LEGO Discovery Center in Springfield Town Center mall. The Stop Light Party Adult Night is a chance to mingle, compete, and build. $24.99, 18+; 6:00 – 8:30.

Maple Syrup Boil-Down, Colvin Run Mill, Feb 10, 18, 25

When the sap is rising and the maple trees are tapped, it’s sugaring time. Watch and learn as the sap is boiled down into sweet maple syrup over an open fire. Sample the delicious combination of maple syrup over fresh-baked cornbread, while supplies last. $8 per person, register online; 11:00 – 2:45.

2024 Virginia Polar Dip, Reston, Feb 10

It’s “freezin’ for a reason,” time, and Reston's annual polar bear plunge is back. In 2024, the Kiwanis Club of Tysons will host this annual fund-raising event. Sign up to take the plunge and support Camp Sunshine, a camp and support program that helps families affected by life-threatening childhood illnesses. Follow the link for rules and sign-up details.

Star-gazing at the Udvar-Hazy Center, Chantilly, Feb 10

Bundle up and head to the Air and Space Udvar-Hazy Center for a night of star-gazing guided by astronomy experts. Admission and parking are free (after 4:00); head to the bus lot at the south end of the parking lot. 6:00 – 8:00.

Super Bowl and Puppy Bowl Sunday, Feb 11

Head to one of the many local breweries, sports bars, and pubs to watch the 2024 Super Bowl. Be sure to tune in for the Puppy Bowl and cheer for the locals.

Valentine's Carriage Rides, Reston Town Center, Feb 12 – 14

Snuggle up with your loves on a horse-drawn carriage ride (up to 5 people per carriage) through Reston Town Center. Advanced reservations are required and proceeds go to charity. 3:00 – 7:00 daily.

Happy Mardi Gras! Feb 13

Get ready to celebrate Mardi Gras on February 13th! In past years we've enjoyed a sweet and tasty King Cake from Harvest Bread. Their King Cakes are made on Fridays so order your cake online and schedule a pick-up time. It's delicious! New in 2024, order King Cake Pretzels from Nordic Knot at Reston's Lake Anne by 2/7 for pickup on 2/11.

Join people all over the world in helping scientists track bird populations when you participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Just count the birds in your own backyard for 15 minutes or more on at least one of the days. A fun family project for the long President's Day Weekend.

The annual George Washington Birthday Parade returns in 2024! Celebrate the 292nd anniversary of George Washington's birth at the nation’s largest George Washington Birthday parade. The one-mile route through the streets of Old Town Alexandria attracts a big crowd and honors one of Alexandria’s favorite sons. Free; 1:00 – 3:00.

Additional events throughout February include a Cherry Challenge among Alexandria’s best restaurants, outdoor walking tours, and virtual events.

George Washington's Birthday at Ferry Farm, Fredericksburg, Feb 19

Celebrate George Washington’s 292nd birthday at his boyhood home with fun activities for the whole family. Activities include games, crafts, tours, living history activities, the Stone Throw Challenge, and birthday cupcakes.

“General Washington” will be there to talk about his youth on the farm. Reserve a 90-minute time slot online; $5 adults, under 17 free. 10:00 – 3:30

Chinese New Year Festival, Falls Church, Feb 17

The 14th annual Chinese New Year Festival features a day of live music, dragon and lion dances. Enjoy children's games and crafts, Asian cuisine, Chinese language workshops, the popular dragon parade, and many activities for children. Admission is $2/$5 for ages 6-12/adults; 10:00 – 6:00.

Polar Plunge + Waddle Run, Leesylvania State Park, Feb 17

Raise money for Special Olympics when you take a chilly dip in the Potomac River at Leesylvania State Park. Music, food, and a best-dressed plunger contest add to the fun. 11:00. Before the plunge, join in a Waddle Run at 9:30.

National Drink Wine Day, Feb 18

Wineries and wine lovers all over the USA celebrate National Drink Wine Day on February 18th. Downtown Culpeper Carnival, Culpeper, Feb 24

  1. Is Dean Malissa still portraying President Washington? I saw another historic interpreter portraying him last time I was at Mt. Vernon.

    • I am not sure who is portraying President Washington now, Linda. I’m always impressed at the quality of the interpreters at Mount Vernon. Hoping to be there for President’s Day this year!
