Beautiful Dirt Farm Brewing: Brews and Views in Northern VA

Updated on November 7, 2023 by Julie McCool

Dirt Farm Brewing combines two favorite things—excellent craft beer and a stunning view of the Virginia countryside. The brewery has a huge outdoor patio and lawn to relax with a beer and soak up the views from the hills of Bluemont Virginia. A stop at Dirt Farm, combined with local nature and small-town fun, makes a perfect day trip from Washington DC.

In 2022 Dirt Farm Brewing added even more seating with that same great view, plus a stage for bands. And in 2023 the brewery opened a dirt road that connects it to neighboring Bluemont Vineyards. Now you can visit both the brewery and winery without having to drive down and back up the mountain.

About Dirt Farm Brewing in Bluemont Virginia

Dirt Farm is a farm brewery in western Loudoun County at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The brewery occupies part of the land the Zurschmeide family has been farming for over 40 years. The name is a nod to three generations of farming heritage.

The family also owns Great Country Farms, the first business on the property, and the popular winery Bluemont Vineyard. All three businesses reflect the family's dedication to farming in Loudoun County.

Our 3 acre hop yard of Cascade, Chinook, Centenninal, and Nugget is established and about 10 acres of 6 row thoroughbred barley. We continue to plant in effort to produce the best Loudoun VA malt. This past fall we harvested Dirt Farm’s own yeast strain. Beers like Tart 31, Som Peach and our Pumpkin Ale utilize traditional fruit and veggies from our very own, Great Country Farms. — Dirt Farm Brewing

The farm feeling hits as soon as you turn down the happily named Foggy Bottom Road, a narrow country drive that leads to the brewery, winery, and farm store. Turn right at the big Dirt Farm sign.

The paved road passes fruit orchards and vineyards as it climbs steeply uphill. While the road is steep, it is paved and easy to maneuver.

Parking begins on the right at the top of the hill and extends down into the woods. It's a little haphazard but we've always been able to find a spot. There is more parking up the hill, behind the brewery.

If you enter Dirt Farm's building from the back you'll pass a cozy seating area with a big outdoor fireplace. This is a nice spot to relax if you don't mind being away from the view. There's also a front entrance from the patio.

A beautiful stone building anchors the main building at the brewery. Inside, there is a front area with seating, a central area where you order drinks and beer, and a back section with a few tables and access to the restrooms. The lines can get long on a busy weekend, but there are four tellers so the line moves fast.

The front side of the building is dominated by a beautiful, large stone patio. This is our favorite area to hang out with a beer, especially on a gorgeous day in Northern Virginia.

There is plenty of seating—a mix of picnic tables and cafe chairs—and lots of room to spread out.

Next to the top patio are open grassy areas dotted with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. There are nice spots for brewery-loving couples as well as areas where families can let the littles play.

Next to and below the patio are two more rows of seating, added in 2022. Below that you'll find a few more Adirondack chairs then a sloping lawn down to the stage. These are all great options when the patio is crowded.

No matter where you sit, you can enjoy the incredible view. On a clear day, you can easily see Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland, the buildings of Tysons Corner, distant mountains, and the Virginia Piedmont stretching to the horizon. In summer, the view is filled with green, bright foliage dots the panorama in fall, and a quieter palette takes over in winter.

Beer and Food at Dirt Farm Brewing

Dirt Farm offers a mix of staple and seasonal craft beers in a wide range of flavors. Our favorites include the Straw Golden Ale, the Scott Brown Ale, and the seasonal Pumpkin Ale. The Tart 31 Cherry Ale is both tasty and highly photogenic, and there are plenty of other IPAs and Ales to choose from.

There is a small but tasty menu on offer at Dirt Farm, and they do not allow outside food, picnics, or coolers on the property. We really like the flatbreads, and the chef kindly swapped shrimp for sausage on our order. We've also had the pepperoni and it was very tasty and filling.
