Central Market House, York

York's historic Central Market House has been in continuous operation as a market since 1888. The spacious food hall is populated with 60 vendors—a mix of 5th and 6th-generation food purveyors and newcomers. An egg and bacon sandwich from The Copper Crust is the perfect start to a day exploring York County. We met a vendor at J.L. Miller & Sons Meats who started in her families' booth as a 4-year-old and is still serving customers at 86. The market boasts a diverse range of dining options, a brewery, craft and specialty vendors, and several inviting spaces to relax.

Revonah Pretzel, Hanover

York County is known as the Factory Tour Capital of the World, with major players like Utz Chips and Harley-Davidson on the circuit. For a more intimate experience, head to Renovah Pretzel, down a narrow, unassuming alley in Hanover (Renovah is Hanover spelled backwards). Every pretzel is hand-rolled and salted, then baked to perfection in a 22-foot, slowly turning, brick and stone oven. Watching the expert staff roll and bake masses of pretzels is fascinating, and the finished product is delicious. Fun fact: the broken pretzels have to be hand broken. Fun fact #2: 80% of U.S. pretzels are made in Pennsylvania, and the state's residents eat 12 times the national average of the crunchy snack.

Aldus Brewing, Hanover

The inspiration behind Aldus Brewing is reflected in their easy-drinking, accessible craft beers. Aldus Manutius was a 15th century printer who invented an inexpensive book format to bring literature to the masses. (He also invented italic type.) The brewers at Aldus want to make craft beer for everyone, eschewing bizarre flavors for straight-up, quality brews. Locally sourced pizzas and sandwiches are a nice accompaniment to the beer. Craft beer lovers should check out this round-up of great US craft beer places (including Aldus).

The Altland House and Center Square Brewing, Abbotstown

The Altland House has been serving American food since the 1880's. President Eisenhower was a repeat guest who favored the chicken and waffles, and you can order that same hearty item today. Downstairs, the area's only female brewer creates a range of great craft beers incorporating fresh and  local ingredients.

Old Republic Distillery, North York

Sip fruit-infused vodka and a range of spirits including rum, moonshine, and small batch brandy in York's first distillery since Prohibition. We enjoyed a tasting, then bought a bottle of the delicious blackberry vodka, flavored with whole fruit, not syrup, to go. Ask about the story behind Love Potion, a moonshine inspired by a generations-old romance.

Brown's Orchards & Farm Market and Logan's View Winery, Loganville

This York County staple is the place to buy fresh local produce, jams, pies, crafts, and more. Brown's Farm Market started as a 35-acre orchard in 1948 and is now an expansive third-generation operation. Shop for fruit from Brown's orchards in the market, or pick-your-own in season. The market is also home to the Logan's View Winery Tasting Room, where you can taste and purchase grape and fruit wines. Logan's View makes all of their wines using local York County grapes and the fruit grown at Brown's, and the pouring staff is friendly and fun.

Wyndridge Farm, Dallastown

Enjoy delicious farm to table meals with craft cider and beer in a gorgeous York County farm setting. Wyndridge was once a working farm. Now it's a beautiful destination for meals in the expansive barn and a patio with lovely countryside views. We recommend the plump crab cake accompanied by grilled potatoes and asparagus with a flight of that tasty cider and beer.
